The War of 1812 and The Star Spangled Banner

We'll begin by reviewing the War of 1812. Students will take notes about what the most interesting facts are.
Then, as our National Anthem has become so analyzed in our news lately, we'll examine both the history of  The Star Spangled Banner as well as the current protests during it begun by Colin Kaepernick.  First we'll read the introduction to it from The American Reader.
Then we'll read the following articles:
Star-Spangled Bigotry
What Colin Kaepernick's Protest Looks Like to a Black 49er's Fan
Memorandum From Chancellor William Mcraven (former Admiral and chief of Navy Special Operations) to the University of Texas System

After discussing the articles, we'll create an exploded version of the National Anthem by using lines from it to start new pieces of creative writing and reflection.
We'll use this document to create it:
The Star Spangled Banner

Also, if you are eligible to do Constitution Test corrections-here are the instructions:
Constitution Test Corrections
Any corrections are due on Wednesday, Oct. 5
