Replacement Credit Opportunity-If you are missing an assignment or if you received late credit on an assignment, you can get those points back by completing the following (if all of your assignments have been turned in on time, you can receive extra credit points for it or you can bank it for a future assignment):
- Search for a current article or political cartoon about Populism in 2016 in the United States.
- Read the article and/or examine the cartoon.
- Post a link to it in the comments to this post (if a cartoon, copy the image).
- Comment on the article or cartoon in your post. Some questions to guide your comment (comments should be a solid paragraph): What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with the point of view? Is populism an important movement in 2016? Should it be checked? What impact does it have?
In order to get full replacement credit, the article or cartoon must be from a credible news source (BEWARE of fake news), must be at least partially about Populism in the United States (you'll find a number of articles about the current populist movement in Europe. Make sure that yours address the U.S. too), and your comment must be thorough and thoughtful.

ReplyDeleteI agree with this cartoon because populism is on the rise in 2016, and it necessarily is not a good thing. Too much populism can cause uprisings and strikes which are dangerous to our country. Also, another issue out of this is major violent uprisings against the government. Populism is an important view because although many people agree with the message it can be taken our of proportion to be dangerous within the country. I think it should be checked because many negative outcomes can happen from this movement. This impact can also be positive however, the movement could bring higher wages for the everyday working man or women, but this can also be looked at as negative for the overall economy of America.

ReplyDeleteThis political cartoon shows how Donald Trump is against the populist movement and how he will make the government controlled by the rich again instead of by the people. I agree with this political cartoon because it shows the corruption in the government and alludes to the fact that electing Donald Trump as president could lead to the government being completely under the control of the rich. I think this because of Donald Trumps previous actions that show he is in favor of the rich being in control.Populism is an important movement in 2016 because it is very important for the government to be controlled by the common people so the nation can be the best place possible for all Americans. The impact this has is it allows all people to have a say so that they can make decisions that benefit everyone instead of just the wealthy.

ReplyDeleteI think this article does a really nice job with looking at populism through a different lens. The author explains how Trump was elected due to three factors- fear of social change and terrorist attacks, and the identity crisis many whites are experiencing. I agree with what the author wrote because when you thing of Americans, a Mexican or a Muslims for example, does not immediately come to mind. Because a small amount of people from these groups have done things that some people fear, Trump wants them removed from the US. Those who are against these racial groups gave their vote to Trump, hoping he could make this nation safer. The author also writes that whites have lower chances in the future to maintain their success which scares the population. Trump is successful, and people want a life of triumph and wealth like Mr. Trump. The regular people of the US voted for Trump out of fear and I don't think this is okay. Populism needs to be checked because we don't want normal people to gain power and use it in result of every worry they have. This relates to when blacks were segregated in the 1860s. Whites in the south began to fear who has power because blacks finally started gaining rights and had a possibly of equality in the future. The populist decision was to take away blacks' right so they would have to start from scratch. Both the 2016 election and the segregation of vote, these decisions were made over the government (populism).

In the political cartoon I choose to write about it shows Trump spreading anger and fear through his words. He used the media to spread his message influencing people by playing on their fears. People believe that Trump isn't a politician and can change or save the country from terrorists and people that are not "American". Populism does impact the country a lot because obviously it played a big role in who will be running our country for the next 4 years. People gave into their fears of being overrun and overpowered. Now we have no clue and Trump has no clue what is going to happen in the future. The American dream that everyone wants is to be successful in life. For some people, Trump has achieved the American dream or he can help others achieve it and because of this reasoning the people of the United States voted for Trump. He campaigned success, a lack of corruption, and a love for the American people which excluded most of the American population allowing him to become the president elect. Populism should be checked because people often are overrun by what ifs and ruled by their fears which causes people to make bad decisions that will affect everyone in the future.

ReplyDeleteIn this article from the Huffington Post, the author argues that Donald Trump is representing a form on Populism in the 2016 election. I thought this idea was interesting. Before, I didn’t connect Trump’s ideas and political techniques with Populism. However, the article helped to clarify that Trump gained some of his followers through different populist techniques such as putting fear into people. When he tells people what they should be scared of, they then listen to how he is going to keep them safe allowing the voters to believe that they have the right to control their own government. The article states the definition of populism as, “the movement of common people whose interests are ignored in times of economic stress and transformation.” I believe that Populism does exist in today’s government which can lead to many problems in the future. Populism needs to be checked because it can lead to conflicts between the economy and the government. Middle and lower class Americans voted for Trump because of his wealth and what he could do to help them. The end of the article had a different opinion than my own. It explains that economic times are hard in today's society and many people are poor and have lost their homes or jobs. The author argues that maybe Populism would help America instead of hurt it.

ReplyDeleteIn this New York Times Article, the writer states that part of Donald Trump's campaign was driven by the new rise of white populism. The author states that Trump was elected due to fear of social change, fear of terrorist attacks and white identity crisis. After hearing all about Trump and the presidential election, I had never related it to populism. It was interesting to read the article because populism is about people power within the government. This was surprising to hear that populism has been driving Trump's campaign because I would think he is opposed to populism. Trump is extremely wealthy and it is surprising that his campaign wants to give more power to the ordinary person over the rich and elite. The author of the article wrote about how most people are extremely sensitive to social change and fear it. Another substantial point the article makes is that the people are more likely to vote for someone who will increase security measures to decrease attacks. I agree with the authors claim because people will go to great lengths to maintain their safety as citizens. One of these great lengths is kickng out people who have lived in our country for years and years. Populism supporters have agreed that Muslims are the main cause of these attacks and they should be deported. Trump has promised to keep the citizens safe from terrorist attacks and I do think that Populism needs to be checked because of the major conflicts that can come from it. People are often more likely to vote for someone who can protect them from their fears. The author does not necessarily pick a side but argues that populism is very dangerous and why people might support the idea of populism and Trump.

ReplyDeleteThe political cartoon I chose depicts Trump and Hilary jumping over herrdles, which in this case symbolizes the votes and the amount of difficulty the debates for presidency holds for both candidate. I agree with this point of view due to the fact that this represents our society quite well. Due to the fact that Trump is not only rich, but he is also white, male, and appeals to majority whites, he is able to pass the debate easily without any challenging obsticles. Hilary on the other hand, has a higher herrdle because she is a female, which not many people in America approve of because they believe men are supperior to women. Populism is the factor who decides who wins. If the people are swayyed by a candidate then there is more of a chance that that candidate will be the one to be elected. Populism is indeed an important movement in 2016 based on our government and electing system. Populism helps keep the government power in check. I do not believe populism should be checked. We as the people of United States should be allowed to make our own choices and not have other people judge for us, like the electoral college. I find the electoral college to be unfair to the people. The electoral college is the reason we will have someone like Trump as our president as opposed to Hilary. Trump is racist, hates immigrants, has islamophobia, and is not in favor of the LGBTQ community. Hilary on the other hand is just a female who wants equality for all. The electoral college seems to make populism powerless and useless. Due to their decisions there have been various riots all over the world now (mainly in the United States though).
